There is no doubt that Fireboy DML is indeed a talented young act but this assurance received a volcanic disruption following the release of his new album ”Apollo” which according to him ”is about evolution, growth, love, and pain. gratitude to God for blessings.”
Since his emergence on the scene a few years ago, Fireboy with his talent and redolent vocals, has effortlessly existed in a raw and visceral buffer dimension portraying him as intended: vulnerable, flawed, and totally real, all of which came to an almost screeching halt in this new album.
”Apollo” displayed an array of traits that birth music that hit just below its true potential. Fireboy with this new project did a fine job bringing a new meaning to ‘Half-heartedly” sprucing up the project with several missteps. Even on songs, one could have easily taken to due to the production employed, he manages to tarnish with passionless, hackneyed lyrics forging a new album that has broken open the gates of doubts.
For an album meant to show growth from his debut album, ‘Apollo” had everything but growth and substance. The songs ”Champion, Lifestyle,” probably meant to bear down on his newly acquired ‘Ego”, both were filled with anything but ‘Ego’.
The artiste in him dared to raise its head on the song ”Eli‘ but somehow cowered in the shadows. ”Tattoo another love song which many hoped would help with his retainment of the loverboy brand, crumbled like a house of card. The sampled sound on ‘‘Dreamer, God Only Knows,’ the poor choice of lyrics, further affirmed the way I feel about the project, inert, and contrived.
The feeling of distortion was felt all through the time I listened to the album as I painfully struggled to feel whatever he was trying to communicate ”egoism, humility, loverboy”, all of which he failed woefully at further giving a bad name to love with his mediocre choice of words.
Apollo makes for the project one listens to all track without skipping in hopes of being able to pick just one track to show their unwavering support, as not one out of the 17 tracks deeply spoke to me. Eli came close, but not close enough.
In conclusion, ”Apollo” lacks every form of genuinity, love, growth, FIREBOY DML, and Fireboy DML 2.0, that was promised and expected. Production on this project is great, no doubt, the producers evolved as expected, a thing that can not be said for the artiste.
